The New Testament reference to tithing runs back to Abraham and we go back to Abraham for our tithe-paying the same as if the law had never been instituted. The paying of tithes can be traced from Abraham to the present day. The writer of Hebrews (7:2) refers to Abraham giving a "tenth part of all" to Melchizedek. Genesis 14:18-20 gives the actual account and states, "and he gave him tithes of all." Abraham lived and paid tithes at least 400 years before the Law.
